Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, called on the Election Commission of India (ECI) to address alleged fraudulent entries in voter lists, spotlighting systemic flaws in electoral rolls. In a post on X, Gogoi questioned, “If the ECI has access to digital lists, why doesn’t it clean up fraudulent entries itself? How come there were 1 lakh fraudulent entries in one assembly seat? Will the ECI explain?”
His remarks follow explosive claims by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on August 7, who alleged a “huge criminal fraud” in Karnataka’s Mahadevapura constituency, where over 1,00,250 votes were reportedly fake, including 11,965 duplicates, 40,009 invalid addresses, and 33,692 misused Form 6 entries. Gandhi accused the ECI of colluding with the BJP, citing issues like deleted CCTV footage and restricted access to digital voter rolls.
The ECI rebuffed Gandhi’s claims as “baseless,” demanding a signed declaration under Rule 20(3)(b) or a public apology, citing a 2019 Supreme Court ruling against machine-readable voter rolls. Gogoi countered, noting the ECI’s “hesitation and unease” in responding, and urged it to publish contradictory data if available.

The Congress has launched a website for citizens to demand ECI accountability and support digital voter rolls, amplifying the #VoteChori campaign. The controversy, fueled by concerns over electoral integrity, comes amid broader opposition allegations of voter list manipulation in states like Bihar.
