In a bold move to curb chaos, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar announced on Friday that visitors will be barred from Vidhan Bhavan during state legislature sessions. The decision comes after a violent scuffle between supporters of NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad and BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar inside the legislature complex on Thursday, following a heated exchange between the two MLAs a day earlier.
Narwekar declared that only ministers, legislators, their designated personal secretaries, and government officials will be allowed entry during sessions. He also prohibited ministers from holding official meetings or meeting visitors in the complex while the House is in session. MLAs will be held accountable for the conduct of their associates, with Narwekar warning that those involved in disruptions, like Nitin Deshmukh and Sarjerao Takale, detained during Thursday’s clash, will face breach of privilege proceedings.
The Speaker revealed plans to form a legislature ethics committee within a week to address such incidents. Both Awhad and Padalkar expressed regret in the House over their supporters’ actions, but the incident has sparked concerns about maintaining order in Maharashtra’s legislative hub.
