A senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader, Dilip Kumar, was critically wounded on Friday afternoon when unidentified gunmen shot him in the chest in broad daylight in Bihar’s Khagaria district. The attack occurred in the busy Gangaur police station area, exposing yet again the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state.
Kumar, a former district general secretary of the BJP and current Mandal Working Committee member, collapsed immediately after the bullet struck him. Bystanders rushed the bleeding leader to Khagaria Sadar Hospital, where doctors described his condition as extremely critical. After emergency first aid, he was referred to a higher facility for specialised treatment.
The victim’s wife recounted receiving a brief, chilling phone call from her husband in which he managed only to say that he had been shot. Family members hurried to the hospital, where they found him battling for life. Local BJP workers gathered in large numbers outside the medical facility, expressing outrage and demanding immediate action against the assailants.

Gangaur police station in-charge Sundar Paswan confirmed that raids are underway and CCTV footage from the area is being examined to identify the attackers. No formal complaint has been lodged yet, as the priority remains Kumar’s treatment, but police have taken suo motu cognisance and launched a full investigation. Officers are awaiting the leader’s recovery to record his statement, which they believe will be crucial in establishing motive.
The brazen daylight assault has sent shockwaves through Khagaria’s political circles and intensified criticism of the state government’s handling of public safety. Residents and party leaders alike have called for swift arrests, warning that such incidents erode confidence in the administration’s ability to protect citizens and political workers.
