The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday celebrated the Modi government’s success in managing inflation, highlighting that retail inflation dropped to a six-year low of 2.1% in June 2025, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO). The party contrasted this with the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) era, claiming an average inflation rate of 5.1% under Modi compared to 8.1% under UPA.
BJP IT chief Amit Malviya emphasized on X that during the UPA’s tenure from January 2012 to April 2014, retail inflation exceeded 9% for 22 out of 28 months, often hitting double digits. “In stark contrast, the Modi government has kept retail inflation mostly under 5%, never letting it exceed 8%,” he stated. Malviya noted that the UPA’s final three years saw an average retail inflation of 9.8%, despite stable global inflation of 4-5%.
The NSO attributed June’s low inflation to softer food prices, particularly vegetables, aided by a robust monsoon. This brings inflation close to the Reserve Bank of India’s 2% lower tolerance threshold. The BJP credits Modi’s policies, including supply chain improvements and in-kind welfare schemes, for maintaining price stability, even amidst global challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions.
