The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday officially announced its list of nine candidates for the upcoming biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of the Indian Parliament, setting the stage for a crucial round of voting later this month. The party’s national president, Nitin Nabin, has been nominated to contest from Bihar, marking a high-profile entry into the Upper House contest for the party’s organisational head.
The list released by the BJP includes leaders drawn from several key states, reflecting the party’s strategy to consolidate its presence nationwide. Alongside Nabin, figures such as Rahul Sinha from West Bengal and Jogen Mohan from Assam were named, underscoring the BJP’s effort to balance representation across different regional fronts.
In Bihar, Nitin Nabin’s nomination carries particular significance. He serves as the party’s national president after his appointment earlier this year, succeeding former leaders and signaling a generational shift in organisational leadership. His candidature is seen as both a recognition of his political standing and a strategic move to strengthen the BJP’s legislative footprint at the national level.

The announcement comes as political attention intensifies ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls, with nominations set to be filed by March 5 and voting scheduled for March 16 in constituencies spread across multiple states. The elections are expected to fill 37 seats in the Upper House, making the BJP’s list part of broader preparations by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to secure a strong position in Parliament.
Political analysts say the party’s selection of candidates balances legislative experience and organisational strength, positioning veterans alongside rising leaders. While many nominees are likely to win comfortably given the NDA’s parliamentary strength in their respective states, the broader contest — especially in states like Bihar where multiple seats are in play — remains politically significant.
The BJP’s announcement has already triggered reactions from other parties and coalitions preparing for the Rajya Sabha polls. Opposition groups, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal and other regional parties, are finalising their own candidate lists and alliance strategies, setting the stage for weeks of political engagement ahead of the vote.
