The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday accused the Congress of fabricating a “Hindu terror” narrative to suppress the rise of then-Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and appease Muslim voters, celebrating the acquittal of seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case. BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad demanded that Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi apologize to the nation, alleging the party orchestrated a “well-calculated conspiracy” for vote-bank politics.
A special Mumbai court acquitted all seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, citing a lack of “reliable and cogent evidence” nearly 17 years after the blast that killed six people. Prasad praised Purohit as a decorated officer who fought terrorism in Kashmir and Thakur as a revered figure, claiming both endured torture and fabricated evidence under the Congress-led UPA government. He insisted they deserve compensation and an apology from the prosecution.
Prasad accused the Congress of deflecting blame from Pakistan-backed terror groups, citing cases like the 2004 Ishrat Jahan encounter, the 2007 Makkah Masjid blast, and the Samjhauta Express blast, where he alleged the UPA shielded suspected Muslim terrorists. He referenced a 2010 WikiLeaks report claiming Rahul Gandhi told the US ambassador that Hindu extremist groups posed a greater threat than Lashkar-e-Taiba, a claim Prasad said was debunked by the Malegaon verdict. “This is a historic day. The Congress’s saffron terror narrative has collapsed,” he declared, urging Rahul Gandhi to stop evading the truth.
The BJP’s sharp rebuke underscores the ongoing political fallout, reigniting debates over alleged misuse of power during the UPA era.
