The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has intensified its attack on the Congress, alleging that Kota Neelima, wife of Congress leader Pawan Khera and a party leader in Telangana, possesses two active voter ID cards, mirroring similar accusations against her husband. The explosive claims, made by BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, have put Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the spotlight, with the BJP asserting that he cannot escape responsibility for what they call “acts of criminality” within his party’s ranks. The accusations come amid a heated political battle over alleged voter fraud, with the BJP demanding an Election Commission probe into the matter.
Malviya revealed on X that Neelima, who contested the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections from Khairatabad, holds two active Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPICs)—one registered in Khairatabad and another in New Delhi. “It’s no coincidence that Congress leaders hold multiple voter IDs across constituencies,” Malviya charged, accusing the party of systematic “vote chori” (vote theft). He criticized Gandhi for targeting honest voters during his recent ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Bihar, alleging that the Congress leader “doxxed” young professionals and daily wagers by revealing their identities without consent, putting them at risk.
BJP national spokesperson Shazia Ilmi escalated the attack, branding Congress a “market of fraud and deceit” rather than the “mohabbat ki dukan” (shop of love) it claims to be. During a press conference at BJP headquarters, Ilmi highlighted that both Khera, a Congress Working Committee member, and Neelima hold dual voter IDs, undermining the party’s credibility. “Congress has nothing to do with democracy; it’s known for vote dacoity,” she alleged, referencing historical claims about vote manipulation in Kashmir and Bihar before electronic voting machines (EVMs). Ilmi also pointed to former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, alleging she was added to the voter list in 1980 despite being an Italian citizen at the time, a claim used to question the party’s commitment to democratic integrity.

The BJP’s accusations follow Gandhi’s provocative remarks on Monday, where he promised a “hydrogen bomb” of revelations about alleged “vote chori” by the BJP and the Election Commission. Gandhi’s claims, made during his Bihar yatra, suggested that voter data analysis from a Karnataka Lok Sabha seat revealed election rigging in 2024 to favor the BJP. Malviya countered that Gandhi’s allegations lack evidence and accused him of maligning ordinary citizens while protecting his party’s alleged malpractices.
The controversy deepened after the Election Commission issued a notice to Khera on Tuesday for allegedly registering in two Delhi constituencies, with a response due by September 8. Neither Khera, Neelima, nor the Congress has officially responded to the latest allegations about Neelima’s voter IDs. The BJP’s call for a high-level probe aims to spotlight what they describe as a pattern of electoral misconduct by Congress leaders, framing it as an attempt to manipulate India’s voter lists to secure their “vote bank.” As the political slugfest continues, the focus remains on whether the Election Commission will act on these allegations, potentially reshaping the narrative around voter integrity in India’s charged political landscape.
