On Thursday, the Uttarakhand Congress, led by state president Karan Mahara, marched towards Raj Bhavan in Dehradun, accusing the BJP-led state government of "throttling democracy" in the ongoing Panchayat elections. The protest was halted midway by police, who took Mahara and other leaders into preventive custody.
Speaking at the Congress state headquarters, Mahara alleged a BJP conspiracy to manipulate the elections, raising serious concerns about state Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar’s conduct. He demanded immediate action against Kumar. Mahara also criticized the authorities, noting that Congress sought an audience with the governor three times to address these issues but received no response.
The march underscores escalating tensions over alleged electoral malpractices in Uttarakhand.
