Senior Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel launched a scathing attack on both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government and the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, blaming their “failure” for the catastrophic floods ravaging Punjab. During a visit to flood-hit areas in Amritsar on Saturday, Baghel, the Congress in-charge for Punjab, accused the authorities of neglecting the crisis, leaving the state to bear the devastating consequences.
Accompanied by Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, and other party leaders, Baghel flagged off trucks carrying relief materials to support affected communities. Speaking to the media, he criticized the state government for its lack of transparency, alleging that no information was being provided about crop damage, human casualties, or livestock losses. “How can the state and central governments be so insensitive? There’s not even a single tweet from the Prime Minister about Punjab’s flood-hit areas,” Baghel remarked, accusing both administrations of abandoning the people.
Baghel highlighted the Congress party’s proactive efforts, noting that its MLAs, MPs, and workers are tirelessly distributing relief materials to those in need. The floods, described as Punjab’s worst in nearly four decades, have submerged over 1,400 villages, affected 3.84 lakh people, and caused significant agricultural losses across 3 lakh acres, according to recent reports. Baghel pointed to systemic failures, such as delayed dam releases and poor infrastructure maintenance, as key contributors to the crisis.

Adding to the criticism, Channi took a swipe at the AAP government, likening it to a “sick and hospitalized” entity. He claimed internal rifts within AAP led to the postponement of a crucial cabinet meeting on the floods, originally scheduled to be chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who was hospitalized on Friday due to exhaustion and low heart rate. “It’s not just the CM who is unwell; the entire AAP government is failing Punjab,” Channi asserted.
The Congress leaders’ remarks have intensified the political blame game amid Punjab’s humanitarian crisis, with opposition parties accusing the AAP and central governments of negligence. As relief efforts continue, Baghel called for urgent action and accountability to address the suffering of Punjab’s people, urging both governments to prioritize immediate aid and long-term flood mitigation strategies.
