Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi ignited controversy by alleging that Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind chief Mahmood A Madani’s recent visit to Assam was a calculated political maneuver designed to incite communal unrest in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Dibrugarh, Gogoi accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of orchestrating the visit to exploit the resulting tensions for political gain, urging Assam’s residents to stay vigilant against external forces—whether Hindu or Muslim—that threaten the state’s harmony.
Gogoi claimed that Madani’s visit, which included a stop in Goalpara to assess areas affected by recent eviction drives, was part of a broader strategy to destabilize Assam’s social fabric. He alleged that the plan involved Madani entering via West Bengal, holding talks with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) functionaries, and delivering a provocative press conference at Guwahati airport before departing for Delhi. “This was meant to create a communal flashpoint, allowing Sarma to capitalize on the fallout,” Gogoi asserted, pointing to a history of unrest following statements by Delhi-based religious leaders.
Madani, who addressed the media on Tuesday, refrained from inflammatory remarks, instead demanding that Assam’s eviction drives adhere to Supreme Court guidelines. Gogoi suggested that Madani’s restraint may have stemmed from fear of legal repercussions, noting that cases would be filed across Assam if he crossed the line, as seen in the case of activist Syeda Hameed. “He knows the current government might shield him, but a future one may not,” Gogoi remarked, crediting public awareness for preventing escalation.

Chief Minister Sarma responded sharply, warning Madani of arrest if he “crosses his limits,” intensifying the political standoff. The controversy has heightened tensions in Assam, where eviction drives targeting illegal encroachments have sparked debates over land rights and communal sensitivities. Gogoi emphasized that Assam’s diverse communities must resist external provocations to maintain peace, accusing both Madani and Sarma of playing dangerous political games.
The AJP leader’s allegations have stirred public unease, with many in Assam wary of potential communal flare-ups. As the state navigates this delicate situation, Gogoi called for unity and transparency, urging citizens to reject divisive tactics and hold leaders accountable. The incident underscores the complex interplay of politics, religion, and land disputes in Assam, with the potential to shape the state’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
