The Samajwadi Party's decision not to field a third candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh has brought the contest for all 10 seats closer to an uncontested outcome. The BJP has nominated eight candidates, while the SP has fielded two, meaning the number of candidates now matches the number of available seats. Unless there is a last-minute change during the nomination and withdrawal process, all 10 candidates are set to be elected without voting. The SP's move has also shifted attention towards party strategy ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
The decision came after speculation that SP chief Akhilesh Yadav could put up a third nominee and force a contest for the final Rajya Sabha seat. The party had initially indicated that such a possibility was under consideration, and an SP MLA had said a third candidate would be nominated. However, on the final day for filing nominations, Yadav indicated that the party would not pursue the additional seat. In a social media post, he said the focus was now “not on three, but on 403”, referring to the total number of seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly and signalling the importance the party attaches to the next state election.
One factor highlighted by political observers is the arithmetic required for a third SP candidate. The party has two nominees in the fray, including veteran leader Ram Gopal Yadav and Reliance Industries executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani. A third candidate would have required the SP and its potential allies to marshal sufficient first-preference votes in the Assembly. Reports on the calculations indicated that the SP would have needed additional support beyond its existing strength, creating the possibility of a close contest with the BJP-led alliance. The BJP, meanwhile, had nominated eight candidates for the 10 vacancies.

The possibility of cross-voting also featured prominently in assessments of the SP's decision. A contested Rajya Sabha election would have required legislators to vote for candidates, creating an opportunity for differences within party ranks to become publicly visible. Political analysts cited in reports suggested that an unsuccessful third-candidate bid could have exposed divisions if some legislators did not support the party's nominee. Such a situation could have generated an additional political challenge for the SP as it prepares for the 2027 Assembly election. These assessments concern possible political consequences rather than an established finding that SP legislators would have cross-voted.
The decision also comes as the SP and Congress face questions over their political coordination and prospective seat-sharing arrangements for the 2027 Assembly election. The SP's choice to avoid a Rajya Sabha contest allows the party to retain its two seats without putting its existing legislative support through a potentially divisive voting exercise. At the same time, the BJP is positioned to secure all eight of the seats it has contested if the nominations remain unchanged. The BJP's candidate list includes Dharampal Singh, Radhakant Ojha, Prakash Pal, Vidyasagar Sonkar, Gopi Krishna Pandey, Priyanka Singh Rawat, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan and Shruti Gangwar.
For Akhilesh Yadav, therefore, the decision places greater emphasis on the forthcoming Assembly battle rather than an immediate attempt to contest the final Rajya Sabha seat. The SP has secured its two nominees' path to the Upper House while avoiding a contest that could have produced an uncertain outcome. The BJP, meanwhile, has the opportunity to secure all eight seats it has nominated candidates for. The formal outcome will follow the scrutiny of nominations and the withdrawal process, with the Rajya Sabha polling scheduled for October 16 if a contest becomes necessary. The episode has nevertheless offered an early indication of how both parties are positioning themselves ahead of the larger political contest in Uttar Pradesh in 2027.
