National Conference MP Aga Ruhullah has alleged that a prominent Muslim parliamentarian had asked Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Yusuf Pathan to withdraw from an Opposition protest in Parliament during the last winter session, a claim that later drew a response from TMC leader Mahua Moitra, who identified the individual as AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
The remarks come amid ongoing political turbulence within the TMC following a split in its Lok Sabha contingent. Former cricketer and TMC MP Yusuf Pathan recently joined a group of 20 rebel MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, intensifying the party’s internal crisis and triggering reactions from leaders across the Opposition spectrum.
In a post on social media platform X, Ruhullah recalled events from the previous winter session of Parliament, when Opposition parties were protesting over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue and other matters. He said TMC MPs had been at the forefront of the demonstrations, participating actively in protests inside the House.

“During the last winter session of Parliament, the entire Opposition was protesting against SIR and other issues in the House. As always, the TMC MPs were in the well of the House, taking the lead and protesting fearlessly,” Ruhullah wrote. He further claimed that he witnessed a prominent Muslim MP, who was not from the TMC, shouting at Yusuf Pathan and asking him to withdraw from the protest.
While Ruhullah did not initially identify the parliamentarian, TMC MP Mahua Moitra later responded to the discussion and claimed that the person in question was Asaduddin Owaisi, president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM). Her statement added a new dimension to the controversy, although no response from Owaisi was immediately available regarding the allegation.
The exchange has unfolded against the backdrop of growing political uncertainty within the TMC following the rebellion by a section of its MPs. As debates over the split continue, the resurfacing of incidents from previous parliamentary sessions has added to the political tensions, with leaders from different parties offering competing accounts and interpretations of events inside Parliament. The allegations remain part of a broader political dispute and have not been independently verified.
