Former India cricketer and Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Yusuf Pathan has found himself at the centre of political speculation amid reports of dissent within the party, with some TMC leaders publicly naming him among those allegedly being courted by rival political forces. Pathan, however, has not made any public statement on the matter. The former all-rounder, who won the Baharampur Lok Sabha seat on a TMC ticket, entered politics after a successful cricketing career during which he was known as a powerful finisher for India and the Kolkata Knight Riders.
His election victory was viewed as a significant political gain for the TMC, particularly because he defeated a high-profile opponent and helped strengthen the party’s presence in the constituency. Recent political developments within the party have, however, placed Pathan under scrutiny. His name surfaced during discussions surrounding allegations of attempts to engineer defections within the TMC. Party leaders have suggested that certain MPs are being approached by rival camps, and Pathan has been mentioned in that context despite maintaining public silence on the issue.
The speculation is particularly notable because Pathan was once viewed as a trusted member of the party’s parliamentary contingent. Political observers had previously discussed the possibility of him vacating his seat if required for a larger organisational strategy involving the party leadership. Instead, his name is now being linked to reports of possible efforts to draw him away from the TMC, highlighting the shifting dynamics within the political landscape. The controversy has also attracted attention because of Pathan’s relatively low-profile political style. Unlike many career politicians, he has generally stayed away from public political confrontations and has focused on constituency-related engagements.

His silence amid the current speculation has therefore fuelled further discussion about his future political course. Adding another layer to the developments, references have been made to distancing by former political and sporting associates, though no formal break or change in political affiliation has been announced. As of now, neither Pathan nor the TMC leadership has indicated that any decision regarding his political future has been made. The episode comes at a time when the TMC is dealing with internal challenges and allegations of factionalism, with opposition parties seeking to capitalise on any signs of unrest.
For the party, retaining unity among its parliamentary ranks remains crucial, particularly as political positioning intensifies ahead of future electoral contests. While speculation continues, the facts remain limited. Pathan remains a TMC Member of Parliament from Baharampur, and there has been no official confirmation of any move away from the party. Until a formal statement emerges from either the MP or the party leadership, the debate over whom Yusuf Pathan is “batting for” is likely to remain a matter of political conjecture rather than established fact.
