Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee found himself at the centre of mounting political and legal pressure on Monday after being questioned for nearly 11 hours by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the alleged teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal. The marathon interrogation in Kolkata came as part of an ongoing probe into alleged irregularities in school recruitment processes.
Banerjee has previously been questioned by central agencies in multiple cases linked to alleged financial misconduct, making the latest round of questioning part of a continuing legal and political scrutiny involving senior TMC leadership. At the same time, reports suggested that Banerjee was also expected to appear before the Lok Sabha Speaker within a tight deadline on the same day, adding another layer of pressure to an already packed schedule.
According to sources cited in media reports, the Speaker’s office reportedly sent an email around 2 pm asking him to present his side by 4 pm in Delhi. The development comes amid what party insiders describe as a turbulent phase for the TMC, with internal tensions reportedly surfacing within the party’s parliamentary ranks. However, official confirmation of large-scale rebellion within the party has not been independently verified, and the situation remains politically fluid.

The alleged urgency from the Speaker’s office, combined with the prolonged ED questioning, has intensified political debate over the timing and coordination of parallel institutional processes involving a senior opposition leader. While the ED investigation focuses on alleged recruitment-related irregularities, parliamentary proceedings concern separate administrative and procedural matters.
Banerjee has not issued a detailed public statement on the latest developments, while the TMC continues to maintain that its leadership is being selectively targeted. The investigations and related parliamentary engagements are expected to continue drawing political attention in the coming days as both legal and legislative processes unfold.
