A political tussle within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) escalated on Saturday as rebel party MPs gathered in Delhi while party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee moved to block any attempt to recognise a separate faction of the party in the Lok Sabha. The developments come amid growing internal tensions within the TMC and reports of dissent among a section of its parliamentary members.
According to sources, a group of rebel TMC leaders who have been holding meetings in the national capital convened at the residence of a Union minister, signalling ongoing efforts to consolidate their position. The meetings are part of a wider political realignment attempt by the dissident MPs, who are reportedly seeking recognition as a separate group within the parliamentary framework.
In response, two TMC MPs aligned with the party leadership met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at his residence and submitted a formal letter written by Abhishek Banerjee. The letter urged that the Trinamool Congress be treated as a single political entity in the House, represented only through its authorised leader and whip. It also requested that no separate recognition, status, or parliamentary facilities be granted to any breakaway group claiming to represent the party independently.

In the letter, Abhishek Banerjee stated that he had been informed that certain members of the Lok Sabha belonging to the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) had either submitted or intended to submit communications seeking recognition as a separate faction. He objected to such moves, asserting that they were not in line with the party’s official organisational structure within Parliament.
The letter further argued that no member or group of members has the authority to unilaterally carve out a parallel faction of the same political party within the House. It emphasised that allowing such recognition would undermine the established framework of party representation and could create procedural and constitutional complications in parliamentary functioning.
The latest developments highlight deepening divisions within the TMC, with parallel efforts underway by both the leadership and rebel camps to assert control over party representation in Parliament. As the Speaker examines the communication, the outcome could determine whether the dissenting MPs are formally acknowledged as a separate group or remain within the official party fold in the Lok Sabha.
