With less than a year remaining before the Punjab Assembly elections, the Bhagwant Mann-led government has intensified its welfare initiatives by introducing a series of direct cash benefit schemes. The latest move is widely seen as an effort by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to strengthen its pro-poor image while navigating a politically challenging period. Political observers, however, believe that welfare measures alone may not be enough to overcome anti-incumbency or other emotionally driven electoral issues that often influence voter behaviour in the state.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday launched the Mukhya Mantri Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana from his constituency, Dhuri. Under the scheme, the government transferred the first three months' instalments, covering July to September, directly into the bank accounts of nearly 40 lakh women beneficiaries. Eligible women will receive ₹1,000 every month, while beneficiaries belonging to the Scheduled Caste category will receive ₹1,500 per month. The programme fulfils one of the key promises made by the AAP during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
The announcement follows another major welfare decision by the state government, which recently approved a five-fold increase in the honorarium paid to village sarpanches. Together, these initiatives highlight the government's focus on expanding financial assistance and strengthening support among rural communities and economically weaker sections. The AAP has consistently projected such schemes as part of its commitment to improving social welfare and delivering on its election promises.

Despite the expanded welfare push, political analysts caution that electoral outcomes are shaped by several factors beyond financial assistance. They argue that issues such as public sentiment, governance, anti-incumbency, and emotionally significant political developments often carry greater weight during elections. As Punjab moves closer to the Assembly polls, the effectiveness of the government's welfare strategy will likely be tested alongside broader political and governance concerns.
