Tragedy struck Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district when a family dispute during a funeral turned fatal. A man identified as Sonu Chauhan, aged 40, was allegedly murdered by his relative after an argument broke out at a cremation ceremony. According to police reports, the accused, Naman, slit Chauhan’s throat in a fit of rage, killing him instantly at the scene. The shocking incident occurred on Thursday, leaving the community deeply disturbed.
Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramod Singh Doval confirmed that the accused, Naman, a resident of Roorkee’s West Amber Talab area, has been arrested. The dispute erupted during the last rites of Chauhan’s nephew, Kunal Pundir, who had died earlier in suspicious circumstances after suffering burn injuries. Chauhan had traveled from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to attend the funeral when the incident took place.
Investigations revealed that Chauhan and the accused had been embroiled in a long-standing family feud, which escalated when they met at the cremation site. In a statement to police, Naman admitted to attacking Chauhan during the argument, claiming he acted out of anger. The weapon used in the attack, along with blood-stained clothes, was recovered from the location where Naman was apprehended while attempting to flee.

A complaint filed by Chauhan’s sister at the Ganganagar police station led to the registration of a murder case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Authorities are now examining whether others were involved in the crime and if the murder is linked to Pundir’s death, which is also under investigation.
SSP Doval stated that the probe is being conducted from all angles, including the circumstances surrounding the initial fire incident that killed Pundir. The police have not ruled out the possibility of a deeper family conflict influencing both tragedies. For now, Naman remains in custody, and further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
