A freak accident triggered by fierce winds and rain turned a routine evening ride into a tragedy in Bengaluru’s Peenya Dasarahalli on Sunday, claiming the life of a 23-year-old woman and leaving a community in shock. Keertana, who was riding pillion on a two-wheeler, was fatally crushed when a massive tree, uprooted by the storm, crashed onto the vehicle. The incident, which unfolded around 6 PM, has raised urgent concerns about urban safety during unpredictable weather and the state of Bengaluru’s aging tree cover.
According to the Soladevanahalli police, Keertana sustained catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, her life snuffed out in an instant by the sheer force of nature. Miraculously, the rider of the two-wheeler escaped unscathed, a stroke of luck that offered little solace amid the heartbreak. In a grim twist, the same fallen tree struck another biker, 40-year-old Bhaskar, who was riding nearby with his daughter. Bhaskar suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is receiving treatment. His daughter, riding pillion, emerged unharmed, spared by mere inches from the tragedy that befell Keertana.
“The tree was brought down by strong winds and heavy rain, a sudden and uncontrollable act of nature,” a senior police officer explained, noting that the storm had caught many in the bustling industrial area off-guard. Witnesses described a chaotic scene: the deafening crack of the tree splitting, followed by screams as passersby rushed to assist. “It happened so fast—there was no time to react,” said a shopkeeper nearby, who helped alert emergency services. The fallen tree blocked the road for hours, snarling traffic as police and civic workers scrambled to clear the debris.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who are now questioning the city’s preparedness for extreme weather events, especially in areas like Peenya, known for its dense tree cover and heavy traffic. “These old trees are a hazard during monsoons—why aren’t they inspected regularly?” fumed a local resident, echoing sentiments of many who fear similar accidents as Bengaluru’s weather grows increasingly erratic. Civic authorities have faced criticism for inadequate tree maintenance, with calls mounting for proactive pruning and risk assessments to prevent such tragedies.
The Soladevanahalli police have registered a case under relevant sections to investigate the circumstances, including whether negligence in urban planning or tree maintenance played a role. “We are examining all aspects, from the condition of the tree to the weather patterns that day,” the officer added, promising a thorough probe. Meanwhile, Bhaskar’s family expressed relief at his survival but joined others in mourning Keertana’s untimely death, with community members organizing prayers for her soul.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers posed by nature in urban settings. As Bengaluru grapples with rapid urbanization and climate shifts, Keertana’s death underscores the urgent need for better infrastructure and safety measures to protect its citizens. For now, her family and friends are left to grieve a vibrant young life cut short, while the city reflects on how to prevent such a tragedy from striking again.
