Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said merit, recognition of achievement and opportunities for talented sportspersons are becoming part of the state's emerging sporting culture. He said the change reflects a broader transformation in the way athletes are supported and recognised by the government. The remarks came as the state prepared to hand over appointment letters to sportspersons selected for government positions.
Adityanath said the state had moved away from a system in which recommendations and influence allegedly played a larger role in sports-related recruitment. He said the government has instead focused on recognising sporting performance and connecting talented athletes with employment opportunities. According to him, this approach has helped create what he described as a more positive sporting environment in Uttar Pradesh since 2017.
A total of 470 sportspersons selected under the skilled sportsperson quota in the Uttar Pradesh Police are scheduled to receive appointment letters. The group includes 43 Sub-Inspectors in the Civil Police, 295 Civil Police constables and 132 Provincial Armed Constabulary constables. The recruitment is intended to provide athletes with opportunities to enter government service while continuing to recognise their sporting achievements.

The Chief Minister said more than 534 sportspersons have so far received direct recruitment opportunities across different government departments. He also said the recruitment process for another 866 sportspersons in the Uttar Pradesh Police is progressing. The government has presented these measures as part of an effort to link sporting talent with employment and greater financial security.
Adityanath said providing government employment to successful athletes also gives them an opportunity to contribute to public service. He described the opening of government positions for sportspersons as an indication of the changes that Uttar Pradesh has witnessed in recent years. The state government's sports quota policy is aimed at creating additional pathways for athletes who have demonstrated their abilities in competitive sporting events.
The Chief Minister's remarks come as Uttar Pradesh continues to promote sports and expand opportunities for athletes within government institutions. By combining recognition of sporting achievements with employment prospects, the government says it wants to encourage talented players to pursue their careers while also building a stronger sporting ecosystem in the state.
