A tragic wall collapse in Hari Nagar, Jaitpur, killed seven people, including two young girls, early Saturday morning after heavy overnight rainfall battered the capital. Delhi police reported that the incident occurred near an old temple, where scrap dealers lived in adjacent jhuggies. The wall, weakened by relentless rain, collapsed suddenly, trapping eight residents.
"All victims were rescued and rushed to hospitals, but seven succumbed to their injuries," said Additional DCP (South East) Aishwarya Sharma. The deceased included three men, two women, and two girls. Authorities initially reported a "building collapse" but later confirmed it was a wall failure. The area has been evacuated to prevent further incidents, with residents relocated from nearby vulnerable structures.
The collapse coincided with intense rainfall that began Friday night, prompting the India Meteorological Department to issue a red alert for Delhi, warning of heavy rain, lightning, and thunderstorms. The downpour caused widespread waterlogging, severely disrupting traffic on major roads like Panchkuian Marg, Mathura Road, and RK Puram. Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and structurally weak areas to stay vigilant, with more heavy rain forecast for the coming days.
