A catastrophic cloudburst unleashed devastating flash floods in the high-altitude villages of Dharali in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The sudden deluge, triggered in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river, tore through the region, sweeping away or severely damaging numerous homes and structures. Local resident Rajesh Panwar reported to PTI that approximately 20-25 hotels and homestays may have been completely washed away, highlighting the scale of the disaster.
The floods have sparked widespread panic among villagers, with many scrambling to reach safer, higher ground as torrents of water surged through the area. Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene, with videos showing powerful currents of water rushing down, accompanied by the sounds of terrified residents screaming. Panwar also raised concerns that 10-12 people might be buried under debris, though authorities have yet to confirm these figures.
Rescue operations are underway, but the full extent of the damage remains unclear as officials work to assess the situation. The cloudburst has left the affected communities in distress, with fears growing about the potential loss of life and property. Authorities are mobilizing resources to provide relief and ensure the safety of those impacted, as the region braces for further challenges in the aftermath of this natural disaster.
