The Uttar Pradesh government has honoured cricketer Rinku Singh for his contribution to India’s victorious campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, announcing that he will be appointed as a Regional Sports Officer (RSO). The move is part of a broader initiative to recognise athletes with government roles and rewards for their achievements.
Rinku was part of the Indian squad led by Suryakumar Yadav, which scripted history by defeating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final. The victory marked India’s third T20 World Cup title and made them the first team to successfully defend the trophy. Despite personal tragedy, with the loss of his father during the tournament, Rinku returned to contribute to the team’s campaign.
To acknowledge his dedication, the state government has included him in a scheme that provides government jobs and financial incentives to athletes excelling at national and international levels. Under this programme, several other sportspersons will also receive appointments across various departments.

Among them, hockey player Rajkumar Pal will be appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for his role in India’s bronze medal win at the Paris Olympics. Paralympic gold medallist Praveen Kumar will also receive a DSP post, while javelin thrower Ajit Singh and sprinter Simran will be appointed as District Panchayat Raj Officers.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is expected to distribute appointment letters during a felicitation ceremony at Lok Bhavan. The event will also honour multiple athletes with the Lakshman Award and Rani Lakshmibai Award for the year 2024–25, each carrying a cash prize and a commemorative statuette.
The initiative highlights the state government’s focus on encouraging sporting excellence by offering stable career opportunities alongside recognition. It also underscores the growing emphasis on rewarding athletes not only for their achievements but also for their resilience and dedication on the international stage.
