The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday announced a revised schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa confirmed that the draft voter list will be published on January 6, 2026, with the final list slated for March 6.
The revised timeline also sets the period for claims and objections from January 6 to February 6. During this time, voters can contest deletions or raise objections, while the notice stage, disposal of claims, and decisions on enumeration forms will continue until February 27 before the publication of the final electoral roll.
The SIR exercise, conducted from November 4 to December 26 under the theme ‘Shuddh Nirvachak Namavali, Majboot Loktantra’ (Clean Electoral Roll, Strong Democracy), involved large-scale pruning of voter lists. Official figures indicate the draft roll will contain around 12.55 crore voters, with nearly 2.89 crore names removed due to death, relocation, or duplication.

Voters whose names have been deleted can reapply using Form 6, which is also applicable for new voters, while objections to inclusions can be filed via Form 7. Rinwa noted that over one crore voters fall under the “unmapped” category and must submit self-attested documents to retain their names in the final list.
The exercise has become politically sensitive, with opposition parties alleging bias and improper deletions, accusations that have been firmly rejected by the ruling BJP. The controversy has intensified debates over electoral transparency and voter rights in the state.
The final electoral roll, reflecting all corrections, deletions, and additions, will be released on March 6, setting the stage for upcoming elections in India’s most populous state. The SIR exercise is being closely watched as a test of procedural fairness and accountability in the electoral process.
