Kunwar Anand Singh, a towering figure in Uttar Pradesh politics and former Member of Parliament from Gonda, passed away at the age of 87 in Lucknow on Sunday night, leaving behind a storied legacy. Singh, fondly known as the 'UP Tiger' and father of Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh, succumbed to sudden health complications, family sources confirmed.
Singh’s condition deteriorated rapidly at his residence, prompting an urgent transfer to a hospital, where he breathed his last. Born into the royal family of Mankapur, Singh was a political stalwart, serving multiple terms as Gonda’s MP and as an MLA, including a stint as Agriculture Minister in the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party government from 2012 to 2017. His influence in eastern Uttar Pradesh was profound, marked by his 1971 Lok Sabha victory over his uncle, cementing his reputation as a formidable Congress leader before later political shifts.
Condolences poured in from across the political spectrum, with Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav among those mourning the loss. “His contributions to Gonda and UP politics will be remembered,” Yadav posted on X, echoing sentiments shared widely online.
