The international futures of veteran Indian batters Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja are set to be discussed at a high-profile Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) review meeting scheduled to take place in Mumbai on Thursday, according to a report by news agency PTI. The meeting comes as the BCCI looks to finalize its roadmap ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. According to the report, unlike Rohit, both Kohli and Jadeja are not currently facing significant pressure over their places in the squad.
According to widely circulated reports, Rohit was informed of the senior selection committee's decision to move on from him not by chief selector Ajit Agarkar himself, but by another member of the selection panel, during India's tour of England earlier this year. The panel had reportedly not favored continuing with the veteran batter beyond the tour and suggested he step away from the format following the series-deciding ODI at Lord's. Rohit was said to be visibly displeased with how the decision was communicated, though he ultimately agreed to the suggestion at the time, according to the report. However, the situation shifted after Rohit produced a commanding innings of 138 off 110 balls in that final ODI at Lord's, despite India ultimately losing the match.
The knock is understood to have temporarily paused any formal retirement discussion, though the report noted that the innings alone did not guarantee Rohit a confirmed place in India's squad for the 2027 World Cup, leaving his long-term future in the format still unresolved heading into Thursday's meeting. The episode also appears to have exposed tension between different factions within Indian cricket's decision-making structure. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia had earlier publicly rejected reports suggesting Rohit was set to retire, stating that the veteran would continue playing for India for as long as he remained part of the team's plans.

According to reports, this public pushback from the board was reportedly not well received by members of the selection committee, contributing to a degree of friction between BCCI officials and the Agarkar-led selection panel. The controversy has also placed scrutiny on Agarkar's own position, with his tenure as chief selector due to conclude on October 4, though he had been expected to receive an extension through the 2027 World Cup. Thursday's meeting is expected to bring together several key figures in Indian cricket's administrative and coaching setup, including BCCI President Mithun Manhas, Secretary Devajit Saikia, head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and VVS Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI's Centre of Excellence.
India's ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill and T20I captain Shreyas Iyer may also be part of the discussions, which are expected to cover the team's recent performances across tours of Ireland, England, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, alongside broader questions of squad planning as India begins its formal preparations for the 2027 World Cup campaign. Rohit, 39, remains one of India's most prolific One Day International batters, having amassed 11,895 runs across 288 ODIs at an average of nearly 49, including 34 centuries. He also holds the record for the most centuries scored in ODI World Cup tournaments, with seven to his name, including five during India's 2019 World Cup campaign, underscoring his continued significance to the team's batting lineup even as questions persist over his role in the side's future plans.
