Security forces arrested 49-year-old Chinese national Liu Qunjing at the Rupaidiha checkpost on the India-Nepal border in Uttar Pradesh on Monday after he crossed illegally from Nepal. The Sashastra Seema Bal detained him while he was allegedly recording video footage of sensitive border installations, raising immediate espionage concerns among officers stationed at the frontier post.

Authorities recovered three mobile phones from Liu, one containing videos of restricted military and border locations inside Indian territory. Pakistani, Chinese, and Nepalese currencies were also seized along with a detailed map of Nepal printed entirely in English, despite the suspect claiming through gestures that he understood neither English nor Hindi during initial questioning.

Interrogation conducted with the help of an interpreter revealed that Liu Qunjing, a resident of Hunan province, had travelled to Pakistan before entering Nepal on November 15 on a tourist visa. He reached Nepalgunj on November 22 and slipped into India two days later without any valid Indian visa or travel documents, triggering alarm across multiple security agencies.

The combination of prior Pakistan travel, possession of multiple currencies, undocumented entry, and deliberate videography of strategic areas has led the SSB to treat Liu as a high-risk suspect. Commandant Ganga Singh Udavat confirmed that the contradictory behavior regarding language proficiency and the nature of recovered material strengthened suspicions of covert intent.

Liu Qunjing has been formally handed over to Uttar Pradesh Police, who registered a case under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act at Rupaidiha police station. Intensive joint questioning by police and intelligence agencies is underway to determine the exact purpose of his presence and whether he was operating alone or as part of a larger intelligence operation.
