A distressing Instagram post showing pesticide tablets and a despairing caption triggered an urgent alert from Meta to the Uttar Pradesh Police’s social media centre at 12:45 pm. The post, shared by a 20-year-old BA first-year student, prompted immediate action.
Within 16 minutes, a team led by a sub-inspector and women police personnel reached her home in Bareilly’s CB Ganj area, where they found her vomiting and in severe distress.
The student, battling depression after a fallout with a man she met on Instagram, had consumed pesticide bought by her father for wheat crops. Quick first aid stabilised her condition, and she later shared her story with the police.
This rescue marks one of 1,315 lives saved by the Uttar Pradesh Police since January 2023, thanks to their partnership with Meta, which flags suicide-related posts on Instagram and Facebook.
Since 2022, this system has enabled rapid responses to prevent tragedies. The Bareilly police, guided by Director General of Police Rajiv Krishna, traced the student’s location using her mobile number provided by Meta. Their swift action underscores the power of technology and teamwork in saving lives.
