The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Friday approved a resolution to rename Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar airport, as Narendra Modi International Airport, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced. The proposed renaming marks a significant development for the major aviation project in the National Capital Region, which is expected to strengthen air connectivity in Uttar Pradesh and support the state's economic growth. The resolution was approved by the state cabinet, although further procedural steps may be required before the proposed name becomes official. Announcing the decision, Adityanath said the airport was expected to become the largest airport in Uttar Pradesh and emerge as a major aviation hub in the country. The project is located in Jewar, in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, and is intended to serve passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, nearby areas of western Uttar Pradesh and parts of the National Capital Region.
Its development is expected to provide an additional aviation gateway for a region that already relies heavily on Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport for domestic and international travel. The airport, formally known as Noida International Airport, is being developed to expand the region's aviation infrastructure and accommodate growing passenger demand. Its strategic location is expected to improve connectivity for residents, businesses and industries across western Uttar Pradesh. The project is also expected to support cargo operations and strengthen links between the region and domestic and international destinations as its capacity expands. The proposed renaming would give the airport a new official identity, subject to the completion of the applicable approval process.
Jewar airport is a key infrastructure project for the Uttar Pradesh government, which has positioned improved transport connectivity as an important element of its economic development plans. Large aviation facilities can support investment by improving access for businesses, facilitating the movement of goods and passengers, and encouraging activity in sectors such as logistics, hospitality and tourism. The airport is also expected to create employment opportunities through construction, airport operations and associated commercial development. The scale of these benefits will depend on the airport's operational capacity, airline participation and the pace at which supporting infrastructure develops. The proposed name, Narendra Modi International Airport, refers to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The cabinet resolution reflects the state government's decision to seek the change, but the announcement does not by itself establish that all formalities associated with renaming the airport have been completed. Airport naming can involve additional administrative procedures and coordination with the relevant authorities. The final implementation of the proposed name will depend on the applicable approvals and official notifications. Until those steps are completed, Noida International Airport remains the established name used for the project. The development comes as Uttar Pradesh continues to invest in roads, expressways, logistics facilities and aviation infrastructure to improve regional connectivity. Jewar airport is expected to complement existing transport links and provide an additional gateway for passengers and businesses operating across the National Capital Region.
Its eventual scale and role in the country's aviation network will depend on the completion of planned facilities, operational expansion and demand from airlines and travellers. The state government has presented the project as an important addition to Uttar Pradesh's infrastructure, with the chief minister projecting it as the state's largest airport and a major national aviation hub. The cabinet's approval of the renaming resolution is therefore both an administrative decision and a development in the public identity of one of the state's major infrastructure projects. The proposal now needs to be distinguished from the airport's operational progress and the remaining formalities required to implement the name change. As work and preparations for the airport continue, its importance will ultimately be measured by its ability to expand passenger capacity, improve connectivity and support economic activity across Uttar Pradesh and the wider National Capital Region.
