Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha announced that the Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Narendra Modi, has approved a Rs 250 crore special development package aimed at uplifting the tribal communities in the state. This initiative follows a significant peace agreement with two previously outlawed groups, the National Liberation Front of Twipra (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), marking a pivotal step towards lasting stability in the northeastern region, which endured violence in the late 1990s.
The funds, integrated as a new component under an existing central government scheme, will focus on enhancing the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable and marginalized tribal groups who have been underserved by prior government programs. Saha highlighted that the package will drive improvements in employment, health services, education, and skill development, while also fostering income-generating livelihood activities, particularly for youth and women in the state.
This development stems from a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed on September 4, 2024, between the Centre, the state government, and the two insurgent groups. Following this accord, 584 insurgents and their followers surrendered on September 24, 2024, at Jampaijala in Sepahijala district, a milestone event after which Saha and the then DGP Amitabh Ranjan declared Tripura as terrorist-free.

Additionally, the chief minister noted that the financial outlay is expected to boost tourism from other parts of India, creating further employment and livelihood opportunities for locals. This aligns with broader efforts to integrate Tripura’s tribal regions into the national mainstream through sustainable development, capitalizing on the state’s cultural heritage and natural beauty to attract visitors.
The package represents a strategic investment in peace and progress, building on the momentum of the 2024 peace accord to ensure that the benefits of development reach the most remote and historically neglected communities in Tripura. It underscores the government’s commitment to transforming conflict zones into hubs of opportunity and growth.
