The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 4,703 crore, including a major extension of the Ahmedabad Metro network and the development of central government office and residential complexes in Amaravati. The decisions were taken on Wednesday, June 10, as part of the government’s ongoing push to expand urban infrastructure and improve administrative facilities across key regions.
A significant portion of the approval has been allocated to the Ahmedabad Metro Phase 2A project, which carries a total outlay of Rs 2,169 crore. The extension is aimed at enhancing connectivity between the existing metro network and important urban zones, including the airport and the proposed Commonwealth Games complex. The government stated that the expansion will help strengthen public transport infrastructure in one of Gujarat’s fastest-growing urban corridors.
The Phase 2A corridor will span approximately 6.032 kilometres and is designed to integrate key residential and commercial hubs with the existing Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar metro line. Officials noted that the project will also support upcoming sporting infrastructure in the region, particularly in view of international events such as the World Police Games 2029 and the Commonwealth Games 2030. The construction phase is expected to generate around 2,000 jobs, while approximately 500 personnel will be employed for operation and maintenance once the system becomes functional.

In addition to the metro expansion, the Cabinet also approved the construction of a central government office complex in Amaravati with an allocation of Rs 1,299 crore. A separate residential complex for government employees has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs 1,235 crore. The plan includes shifting central government offices in the city to the newly developed facility as part of a broader administrative restructuring initiative.
Officials said the Amaravati projects are intended to streamline governance infrastructure and improve coordination between departments by bringing offices under a unified complex. The residential development is expected to support government employees with improved housing facilities located near their workplaces. Together, these approvals reflect the Centre’s continued focus on large-scale infrastructure development in both urban transport and administrative sectors.
