Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for multiple development projects worth approximately ₹18,800 crore in Surat, marking one of the largest infrastructure investment initiatives in the city in recent years. The projects span sectors such as transport connectivity, industrial infrastructure, power distribution, healthcare, and urban development, aimed at strengthening Surat’s position as a key economic hub in Gujarat and the wider western region.
A major highlight of the announcements was the dedication of key packages of the eight-lane access-controlled Vadodara–Mumbai Expressway. The project is expected to significantly improve high-speed connectivity between Gujarat and Maharashtra, reduce travel time, and enhance freight movement efficiency along one of India’s busiest industrial corridors. Officials said the expressway will play a crucial role in boosting logistics and regional trade integration.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the four-laning of key sections of National Highway-56. This project is designed to improve road connectivity across tribal regions of Gujarat and enhance access to the Statue of Unity corridor, which has become a major tourism and economic development zone. The upgraded highway infrastructure is expected to improve regional mobility and support socio-economic development in underserved areas.

In the industrial and utilities sector, Modi inaugurated several power transmission and distribution projects aimed at strengthening Gujarat’s electricity evacuation capacity and improving the stability of the national grid. These upgrades are intended to support rising industrial demand in the state while ensuring more efficient and reliable power supply for both commercial and residential users.
Healthcare infrastructure in Surat also received a boost with the inauguration of a 200-bed Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) hospital. The facility will provide secondary healthcare services, including emergency care, diagnostics, and specialised treatment for workers and their families, expanding access to affordable medical services in the industrial city.
The Prime Minister also reviewed ongoing industrial operations in the Hazira region, a major industrial and defence manufacturing hub in Surat district. Known for its heavy engineering and production facilities, Hazira has been central to Gujarat’s industrial expansion strategy. Officials said the broader development push across Surat and adjoining regions is expected to enhance urban mobility, industrial output, power reliability, and healthcare access, further consolidating the city’s role in India’s western economic corridor.
