The quiet lanes of Parsvnath City in Ujjain have been enveloped in grief following the tragic death of a young student, Gurkirat Singh Manocha, in Canada. What was once a household filled with hope and aspirations now stands in silence, as the family struggles to come to terms with the loss and the daunting financial burden that has followed.

On Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav visited the bereaved family, offering condolences and assuring government support. He stated that authorities are in touch with the Canadian government through the Government of India and emphasized that the state would stand by the family in both emotional and logistical matters. “This is our family, our city’s child,” he said, promising assistance in whatever decision the family takes.

Gurkirat had travelled to Canada to pursue higher education, enrolling in a Post-Degree Diploma in Business Management at Northern Lights College in Fort St. John. His education was financed through a loan taken by his father, Gurjeet Singh, who works in the food industry and had hoped to secure a better future for his son. Those dreams were shattered on March 14 when Gurkirat was allegedly assaulted by a group of 10 to 12 individuals and later run over by a vehicle. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The tragedy has been compounded by the high cost of repatriating the body. The family has been asked to arrange approximately $40,000 (around Rs 35 lakh) for formalities, with an additional Rs 10 lakh required for transportation to India. Facing these overwhelming expenses, the family has decided to perform the last rites in Canada and bring back his ashes instead.

In an appeal to local authorities, Gurjeet Singh has sought urgent financial assistance of nearly Rs 50 lakh. He has also requested expedited visas for Gurkirat’s elder brother, Prabhkirat Singh, and cousin, Saheb Singh, so they can travel to Canada to perform the final rites. The request has been submitted to Member of Parliament Anil Firojiya and the Chief Minister, both of whom have assured full support.

While the government’s response offers some relief, the loss has left an irreplaceable void. For the family, what remains is not only the weight of financial hardship but also the profound sorrow of a life cut short—turning a dream of opportunity abroad into a painful memory.
