President Donald Trump has unveiled a Boeing 747-8 aircraft formerly owned by Qatar, which has been converted into a temporary version of Air Force One for presidential use. The aircraft was presented to reporters on Friday and is expected to serve as an interim presidential plane until new Boeing-built Air Force One jets are delivered in the coming years.
The unveiling marked a significant step in the transition of US presidential air transport, with Trump stating that the current Air Force One fleet would soon be replaced for long-distance international travel. The newly introduced aircraft, originally part of Qatar’s fleet, has been refurbished and modified to meet the operational requirements of carrying the US president, including secure communications systems and enhanced onboard facilities.
According to officials and media reports, the aircraft is notably larger and more luxurious than the current presidential planes in service. While specific technical and interior modifications have not been fully disclosed, the jet is expected to include upgraded seating areas, workspaces, and secure communication systems necessary for conducting official state business during flight. The aircraft is being positioned as a “bridge” solution while Boeing completes production of the next-generation Air Force One fleet, currently expected to enter service around 2028.

Trump told reporters that he plans to use the aircraft for upcoming international travel, including the NATO summit scheduled in Ankara, Turkey, next month. He also suggested the possibility of a future trip to China, indicating that the aircraft will play a central role in presidential foreign travel during its interim service period. The president further stated that his recent return from the G7 summit in France would mark the final scheduled journey aboard the current Air Force One aircraft.
In addition to its diplomatic role, Trump said the aircraft is expected to feature in US Independence Day celebrations. He noted that the plane would take part in a flyover during July 4th events, allowing the public to view the aircraft before it becomes fully integrated into routine presidential operations. The announcement has added symbolic significance to the aircraft’s introduction, tying it to national celebrations.
The Boeing 747-8 itself was previously owned by Qatar and has undergone extensive refurbishment to meet US presidential transport standards. While the aircraft’s exact procurement details have not been fully disclosed, it is intended to serve as a temporary replacement until Boeing completes delivery of the next-generation Air Force One aircraft. Those new planes have faced delays but are still scheduled to enter service later in the decade.
Until then, the modified Qatari Boeing 747-8 will operate as the primary presidential aircraft, ensuring continuity in air travel for the US president while offering upgraded capacity and modernised systems compared to the ageing current fleet. The unveiling underscores ongoing efforts to modernise presidential aviation capabilities while managing delays in the long-term replacement program.
