A tragic boat accident in the Ganga River claimed one life and left three people missing on Saturday morning in Jharkhand’s Sahibganj district. The incident occurred in the Maharajpur Gadaidiara area under the Ganga Nadi Police Station’s jurisdiction, when a boat carrying 32 passengers capsized, according to Sahibganj Deputy Commissioner Hemant Sati.
Of the 32 passengers, 28 were rescued, but one person was found dead, and three others remain unaccounted for. “We’ve deployed 28 divers to search for the missing individuals, and requisitions have been sent for National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) support to intensify rescue efforts,” Sati told PTI. The cause of the capsize is under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting overloading or strong river currents as possible factors.
The incident echoes a similar tragedy in January 2025, when a boat carrying 17 passengers capsized in Bihar’s Katihar district, killing three and leaving four missing. Authorities are probing whether safety protocols, such as life jacket usage or boat capacity regulations, were followed.
The ongoing rescue operation continues to search for the missing, as the community mourns the loss and awaits answers.
