Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha leader Derek O’Brien accused the Modi government of orchestrating Parliament disruptions to avoid debating the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. In a fiery post on X, O’Brien claimed the “creaky Modi coalition” is deliberately stalling discussions on critical issues, including the SIR and alleged targeting of West Bengal.
The SIR, launched by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on June 28, 2025, aims to clean Bihar’s voter lists by removing ineligible entries and duplicates while ensuring eligible citizens are included. The exercise, the first since 2003, requires 2.93 crore voters to submit birth and parental documentation, sparking fears of disenfranchisement. O’Brien has called it a “sinister move” to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) covertly, citing a BJP internal survey predicting only 46-49 seats in West Bengal’s upcoming polls.
Parliament faced a third day of adjournments on Wednesday as opposition parties, including TMC, demanded a debate on the SIR’s stringent requirements, which critics argue disproportionately affect marginalized groups. O’Brien reiterated TMC’s commitment to raising the issue inside and outside Parliament, urging the ECI to remain neutral and not act as a “BJP branch office.”
