Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs have escalated their campaign against the alleged targeting of Bengali-speaking migrants, submitting notices in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Wednesday to demand discussions on the issue, alongside the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. TMC MP Sushmita Dev, in her notice to the Rajya Sabha, accused the government of using the Election Commission to disenfranchise up to two crore voters, particularly the poor and migrants, through stringent documentation demands like parental birth certificates.
The protests follow a broader TMC-led "Bengali Asmita" campaign, with West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee accusing BJP-ruled states of harassing Bengali migrants by labeling them as "Bangladeshis" or "Rohingyas." Incidents in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Assam, including forced detentions and deportations, have fueled the outrage.
On Tuesday, opposition MPs, including TMC’s Sagarika Ghose, staged protests in Parliament, condemning the Bihar SIR as a threat to democracy, leading to the adjournment of both Houses.
