A high-stakes security operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district entered its second day, marked by intermittent gunfire and powerful explosions in the Bhagna forest, approximately 25 km from Kishtwar town, officials reported.
The operation targets two most-wanted Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists, Riyaz Ahmad and Mudassar Hazari, who have been active in the district for eight years and carry a Rs 10 lakh reward each. Intelligence inputs prompted the cordon and search operation, which began early on August 10, with the terrorists believed to be hiding in a deep cave on a cliff in the Dool area.
The operation intensified after the terrorists opened fire on security forces at 6:30 AM on Sunday, fleeing deeper into the forest following retaliation. Intermittent exchanges of fire occurred twice more that day, with the last reported near the cave on Sunday evening.
Security forces, bolstered by Army para commandos, police, and CRPF reinforcements, have deployed drones to prevent the terrorists’ escape, officials said. Overnight, powerful blasts and sporadic gunfire echoed through the area, indicating a relentless pursuit to neutralize the threat.
The operation, described as challenging due to the dense forest and rugged terrain, reflects a coordinated effort to ensure the terrorists, suspected to have taken shelter in the cave, are apprehended. Authorities are maintaining a tight cordon, with further details expected as the search continues in this critical anti-terror effort.
