The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) has ordered the state’s Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report by August 28 following a suspected food poisoning incident that sickened over 30 girl students at a state-run social welfare residential school for Scheduled Tribe girls in Nalgonda district. The students, who fell ill on Monday, reported vomiting and other symptoms after consuming fried ‘alasandalu’ (black-eyed peas) and chicken on Sunday evening, followed by ‘pulihora’ (tamarind rice) for breakfast.
The TGHRC, responding to media reports of “food poisoning and unhygienic conditions” at the ST Welfare Hostel in Mudigonda, demanded a comprehensive report covering the students’ health status, inquiry findings, actions against responsible staff, and preventive measures for food safety across all hostels.
Approximately 35 students were hospitalized, with most now stable and several discharged, according to officials. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about food safety in Telangana’s residential schools, prompting urgent calls for systemic reforms.
