An emotional farewell marked the final journey of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) co-founder and legendary tribal leader Shibu Soren, fondly known as 'Dishom Guru', who was laid to rest with full state honours in his ancestral village Nemra, Ramgarh district, on Tuesday.
The 81-year-old veteran passed away at a private hospital in Delhi on Monday, after prolonged kidney-related illness. His death triggered an outpouring of grief across the country, with President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi among the many dignitaries who paid their respects.
A special flight carried his mortal remains to Ranchi, where thousands gathered to pay homage. His body was placed at the Jharkhand Assembly at 9 am for the public to offer their final tributes. Emotional scenes unfolded as leaders, supporters, and common citizens mourned the loss of a figure who brought tribal voices to the heart of Indian politics.

A flower-decked open carriage carried the body to his residence in Morabadi, with Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his brother, MLA Basant Soren, seated beside their father's body. Kalpana Soren, the CM’s wife and legislator, was seen in tears and remarked, “Everything has become desolate... Your struggle, your love, your convictions—this daughter of yours will never forget.”
State mourning has been declared till August 6, and schools across Jharkhand remained shut Tuesday, many holding special prayers in memory of the departed leader. The monsoon session of the Jharkhand Assembly was adjourned sine die, and Rajya Sabha proceedings were also suspended on Monday.
Security and traffic arrangements in Nemra were ramped up as top leaders like Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge were expected to attend the final rites.
Shibu Soren’s legacy spans decades—38 years of leadership in the JMM, three terms as Jharkhand’s Chief Minister, and a powerful voice for tribal rights. His passing marks the end of a political era deeply rooted in the fight for justice and dignity for the tribal communities of India.
