The Supreme Court on Wednesday revoked the bail of Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the brutal murder of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar at Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra overturned the Delhi High Court’s March 4, 2025, order granting Kumar bail, directing him to surrender within seven days. The ruling came in response to an appeal by Ashok Dhankar, the victim’s father, who challenged the high court’s decision.
Kumar, a two-time Olympic medallist, is accused of leading a fatal assault on Sagar Dhankar in May 2021, allegedly over a property dispute. The attack, involving baseball and hockey sticks, also injured two of Dhankar’s friends. A postmortem report revealed that Dhankar succumbed to cerebral damage caused by a blunt object. Kumar was arrested shortly after the incident and has faced charges under the Indian Penal Code, including murder, criminal conspiracy, intimidation, and rioting with a deadly weapon, alongside violations of the Arms Act.
The trial court, in October 2022, noted that Dhankar was abducted and brought to the stadium, where he was severely beaten by Kumar and others. Kumar had previously been granted interim bail in July 2023 for knee surgery. The Supreme Court’s decision has reignited public attention on the high-profile case, raising questions about accountability for prominent figures. As Kumar prepares to surrender, the ongoing trial continues to draw scrutiny, with the victim’s family demanding justice for the tragic loss.
