A delegation of six Supreme Court judges, led by Justice B.R. Gavai, arrived in Manipur today, March 22, 2025, to visit relief camps housing thousands displaced by nearly two years of ethnic violence.
The team, including Justices Surya Kant, Vikram Nath, M.M. Sundresh, K.V. Viswanathan, and N. Kotiswar Singh, aims to bolster legal and humanitarian support for the affected communities. Their visit coincides with the 12th-anniversary celebrations of the Manipur High Court.
The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), chaired by Justice Gavai, organized the outreach following the sectarian clashes that erupted on May 3, 2023, killing over 250 people and displacing more than 50,000. Today, Justice Gavai will virtually inaugurate legal and medical camps across all districts, alongside new legal aid clinics in Imphal East, Imphal West, and Ukhrul.
Essential relief materials will also be distributed to internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The initiative builds on efforts by NALSA and the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA), which have established 273 legal aid clinics in camps to help IDPs access government welfare schemes, recover lost documents, and secure medical aid.
A team of 25 specialized doctors from Chennai will provide medical support for six additional days. This high-profile visit, the first by such senior judiciary figures since the unrest began, underscores the ongoing crisis, especially as neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Home Minister Amit Shah has visited Manipur since the violence started.
