Opposition vice presidential candidate and former Supreme Court Justice B Sudershan Reddy has reiterated his call to bring back India’s wealth stashed abroad, emphasizing that the fight against black money remains a critical national priority. Known for his landmark rulings on black money during his tenure, Reddy told PTI that the effort to repatriate illicit funds is ongoing and essential for the nation’s economic health.
During his time on the Supreme Court, Reddy delivered judgments criticizing successive central governments for their lax approach to investigating black money cases. He notably ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe and recover funds stashed overseas. “A substantial section of the nation’s wealth has moved out through various means and mechanisms. That has to be brought back—it’s our money, your money, my money, the nation’s wealth,” Reddy said, underscoring the urgency of the issue.
Reflecting on the political impact of his rulings, Reddy recalled how veteran BJP leader L K Advani championed the cause, using the Supreme Court’s verdict as a key campaign issue during a nationwide yatra ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which the BJP and its allies won. “After my retirement, I interacted with Advani, and he never questioned me about other judgments like Salwa Judum. He appreciated the Supreme Court’s efforts to unearth black money,” Reddy noted.

Reddy emphasized that the responsibility now lies with those in power to implement the court’s directives. “Unless someone can prove there is no black money or black economy, the work to recover it must continue,” he said. His comments come amid ongoing debates about economic transparency, with the issue of black money remaining a contentious topic in India’s political landscape. As Reddy campaigns for the vice presidency, his focus on repatriating illicit wealth highlights his commitment to safeguarding the nation’s economic interests.
