A routine journey home turned into a horrific ordeal for a 29-year-old woman in Karnataka's Chikkamagaluru district when she was attacked with acid outside her residence in April 2015. The victim, identified as Sumana, had closed her beauty parlour in Menase village and stopped to purchase chicken for dinner before returning home. As she arrived at her house and began unlocking the gate, two men wearing helmets approached her on a motorcycle, asking for directions to Hornad. Moments later, one of them allegedly threw acid at her face before both fled the scene.
Family members rushed out after hearing Sumana's screams and found her with severe burn injuries. She was initially taken to a nearby hospital before being shifted to a specialised medical facility in Manipal for advanced treatment. Police registered a First Information Report (FIR), and officers from the Sringeri Police Station launched an investigation into what initially appeared to be a targeted acid attack. Investigators began collecting evidence from the crime scene while questioning witnesses and examining possible motives behind the assault.
The investigation focused on identifying the attackers, tracing their movements before and after the incident, and determining whether the assault had been planned in advance. Police examined available evidence, including witness statements and other leads, to establish the sequence of events. As the inquiry progressed, investigators worked to uncover the identities of the two helmet-clad suspects and the circumstances that led to the attack.

Acid attacks are among the most serious forms of violent crime, often causing permanent physical injuries, long-term psychological trauma and significant social and financial hardship for survivors. Such cases require extensive medical treatment, reconstructive surgeries and prolonged rehabilitation. Law enforcement agencies generally treat these incidents as high-priority investigations due to the severity of the injuries and the premeditated nature of the offence.
The case underscored the importance of swift emergency response and specialised medical care in improving the chances of recovery for acid attack survivors. It also highlighted the critical role of detailed police investigations in identifying those responsible and ensuring they are brought to justice. Authorities continued gathering evidence as the investigation progressed, with officers pursuing every available lead to solve the case.
The attack sent shockwaves through the local community, raising concerns about women's safety and the need for stricter action against acid-related crimes. While the investigation sought to establish the motive behind the assault and identify all those involved, the incident served as a reminder of the devastating consequences of such attacks and the importance of timely legal action, victim support and stronger preventive measures.
