Climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk has urged supporters to make the proposed July 20 march to Parliament a major success, describing the mobilisation as India’s “second freedom movement.” In a handwritten message shared from Safdarjung Hospital through his wife Gitanjali J Angmo, Wangchuk called for “freedom from injustice” and “freedom from fear,” linking the statements to issues raised during his ongoing protest.
In the message shared through Wangchuk’s account on social media platform X, he connected “freedom from injustice” with alleged irregularities such as paper leaks in competitive examinations. He also linked “freedom from fear” to what he described as his “illegal detention” at Safdarjung Hospital. The note urged supporters to participate in the Parliament march and help make the demonstration successful.
Wangchuk’s reference to “illegal detention” relates to his allegation that he has been kept at the government hospital against his wishes after being removed from the Jantar Mantar protest site. He was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital following a prolonged hunger strike, with authorities stating that the move was made amid concerns over his health. His supporters have raised concerns about his treatment and access during his hospital stay.

The July 20 Parliament march has been called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which has been demanding accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, changes in the examination system, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Wangchuk joined the CJP-led protest on June 28 and has continued to support the campaign despite being moved to the hospital.
The latest message comes amid continued attention on Wangchuk’s protest and his demands related to education reforms and transparency. His supporters are expected to participate in the planned march, while authorities are likely to monitor the gathering due to security considerations around Parliament. The activist’s ongoing hunger strike and statements from hospital have kept the issues raised by the movement in public focus.
