A GSLV rocket carrying the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) earth observation satellite EOS-05 successfully launched in a pre-dawn mission on Friday from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The rocket lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 2:55 am IST, marking another milestone in India's ongoing efforts to expand its earth observation and imaging capabilities from space. Soon after liftoff, the EOS-05 satellite was successfully placed into its intended sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, confirming the precision of the launch sequence.
ISRO Chief Dr. V. Narayanan expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "I am very happy to announce that the GSLV-F17 vehicle has successfully and precisely injected the advanced Earth observation satellite EOS-05, the Geo-Imaging Satellite, into the intended and required orbit." Thomas Kurian, Mission Director for the GSLV-F17 rocket mission, highlighted the significance of the achievement, noting that EOS-05 is the heaviest satellite ever launched by a GSLV into a geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) or sub-GTO orbit. "It is a moment of great pride and happiness for all of us.
The success of GSLV has completed its 19th mission, and the mission carried the EOS-05, a uniquely configured Earth observation satellite capable of near-real-time imaging," Kurian said, adding that "a launch lasts only a few minutes, but behind those few minutes are months and years of rigorous effort." EOS-05 is designed to provide India with a continuous, bird's-eye view of the nation from an altitude of nearly 36,000 kilometers above Earth, positioning it in geosynchronous orbit where it can maintain a steady watch over large geographic areas without losing coverage.

Reports on the mission indicate that the satellite is equipped with high-frequency imaging capabilities, allowing it to revisit the same location every few minutes and cover broad swaths of Indian territory within roughly half an hour, capabilities expected to support disaster response, agricultural monitoring, and environmental tracking. The GSLV-F17 launch vehicle used for the mission stands 51.7 metres tall and has a liftoff mass of 420.5 tonnes, placing it among the largest operational launch vehicles currently in India's space program. The mission adds to ISRO's growing track record with the GSLV series, which has now completed 19 missions, reinforcing the vehicle's role in deploying increasingly sophisticated and heavier payloads into orbit.
While EOS-05 is primarily intended for civilian earth observation purposes, supporting applications such as disaster management, agricultural monitoring, and environmental surveillance, its capabilities are also expected to contribute to broader strategic awareness and national security planning, underscoring the dual-use potential often associated with advanced earth observation satellites. The successful deployment of EOS-05 reflects ISRO's continued progress in advancing India's space-based imaging infrastructure, further strengthening the country's capacity for near-real-time monitoring of its territory and surrounding regions.
