In a stunning decision, the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune ruled on July 15, 2025, that the 17-year-old boy who fatally struck two IT professionals while driving a Porsche under the influence will be tried as a juvenile. The tragic incident, which occurred on May 19, 2024, in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar, claimed the lives of Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa, who were riding a motorcycle when the teen’s car hit them.
The Pune police had pushed for the teen to face adult charges, citing the "heinous" nature of the crime, which included attempts to tamper with evidence. However, the JJB rejected this plea, as confirmed by the defense counsel. The teenager was initially granted bail hours after the crash, with controversial conditions like writing a 300-word essay on road safety, sparking public outrage. Three days later, he was sent to an observation home.
On June 25, 2024, the Bombay High Court ordered his immediate release, declaring the JJB’s remand orders illegal and emphasizing strict adherence to juvenile justice laws. This ruling has reignited debates over accountability and justice in high-profile cases involving minors.
