A meeting between Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) chief Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has triggered political speculation in the state, with opposition ally Shiv Sena (UBT) questioning the significance of the interaction. The meeting took place at the Maharashtra Assembly on Wednesday and has drawn attention amid existing tensions within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA).
Sharad Pawar was present at the Assembly to attend a meeting on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. During his visit, Pawar held a separate meeting with Shinde at the Deputy Chief Minister’s office, where the two leaders reportedly interacted for around 15 minutes. Shinde’s office described the meeting as a courtesy call, while neither leader disclosed details of their conversation.
The timing of the meeting has fuelled speculation within political circles, particularly as the MVA alliance of Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) continues to deal with internal challenges. The political atmosphere has remained sensitive following the recent shift of six Shiv Sena MPs from the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction to the Eknath Shinde camp.

The meeting also led to questions over possible political realignments, with speculation that some leaders within the Sharad Pawar-led party could be open to closer ties with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, no official statement has emerged from the NCP (SP) leadership regarding any such possibility.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticised Pawar’s decision to meet Shinde inside his Assembly office, saying the move had affected the sentiments of MVA partners. Raut questioned the need for holding a party meeting at Shinde’s chamber and said there were several other places within the Assembly premises where Pawar could have met his legislators.
While acknowledging Sharad Pawar’s stature as a senior political leader, Raut accused Eknath Shinde of having damaged Maharashtra’s political environment through his role in the split of Shiv Sena. He urged MVA allies to maintain distance from Shinde, saying the alliance’s credibility depended on maintaining political clarity. The controversy has added another layer of uncertainty to Maharashtra’s evolving political landscape.
