US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the United States is prepared to sell as much energy to India as the country is willing to purchase, highlighting growing cooperation between the two nations in the energy sector. Rubio made the remarks while speaking to reporters in Miami ahead of his official visit to India and Sweden. He described India as a “great partner” and indicated that Washington is interested in expanding energy exports to meet India’s increasing demand amid global supply uncertainties.
Speaking before boarding his flight, Rubio pointed to the United States’ strong energy production and export capacity, stating that the country is currently operating at historic production levels. He said the US wants India to become a larger part of its energy export portfolio and stressed that both sides were already engaged in discussions aimed at increasing cooperation in the sector. His comments come at a time when global oil markets remain sensitive to geopolitical tensions and disruptions in major shipping routes.
Rubio’s remarks were made in response to questions regarding India’s energy security concerns following disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important route for global oil transportation. The closure or instability in the region has raised fears of rising fuel costs and supply shortages for energy-importing nations, including India. The US official suggested that increased American energy exports could help diversify India’s supply sources and reduce dependence on vulnerable trade routes.

The US Secretary of State also referred to potential opportunities involving Venezuelan oil, indicating that broader global energy realignments may create additional supply options for countries such as India. Although he did not provide detailed policy specifics, the comments reflect Washington’s efforts to strengthen economic and strategic ties with India through energy cooperation. India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing energy consumers, with rising industrial demand and expanding infrastructure driving higher import requirements.
Rubio is scheduled to visit India from May 23 to May 26 and is expected to travel to New Delhi, Kolkata, Agra, and Jaipur during the trip. The visit will also include meetings related to the Quad grouping, which includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. He said the visit would provide an opportunity to engage with ministers from the Quad nations and further discussions on regional cooperation, economic partnerships, and strategic priorities in the Indo-Pacific region.
India and the United States have steadily expanded cooperation in energy trade over the past several years, particularly in crude oil and liquefied natural gas imports. The US has emerged as an important energy supplier to India as New Delhi seeks to diversify its import basket and strengthen energy security. Rubio’s remarks are being viewed as another indication of Washington’s intent to deepen trade and strategic engagement with India while leveraging America’s growing role as a major global energy exporter
