Madurai Police on Thursday launched intensive searches at the Sikandar Dargah atop Thirupparankundram hill, the District Collector’s office, and the District Court following a bomb threat email. Bomb squads were deployed, and teams meticulously combed each location to ensure public safety. After thorough inspection, authorities confirmed that the threat was a hoax and no explosives were found.
This alert follows a similar incident reported just a day earlier on Wednesday, when the same sites—including the Sikandar Dargah, Madurai Collectorate, and district court—received another bomb threat. Police had conducted searches then as well, emphasizing heightened vigilance in the region due to repeated threats targeting key civic and religious locations.
The Madurai City Police, in coordination with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, carried out detailed examinations of both the hilltop dargah and the nearby Kasi Viswanathar Temple located on the rear side of the hill. Officials confirmed that no hazardous material was discovered, declaring the email warning a false alarm. The authorities have urged the public to remain calm while investigations continue.

The incidents have occurred amid an ongoing controversy over the traditional lighting of a lamp atop Thirupparankundram hill. A legal and political dispute has arisen following a Madras High Court order allowing the Karthigai Deepam to be lit on a stone pillar near the dargah. The state government’s opposition to the order has fueled protests, political clashes, and rising tensions between religious groups and authorities in the area.
Authorities have stressed that security measures will continue at key sites while the legal and political situation unfolds. The police have also appealed to citizens not to spread unverified information, highlighting that repeated bomb hoaxes disrupt law enforcement resources and public peace in Madurai.
