Reactions have poured in from religious leaders and political figures following Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s remarks emphasising cow protection and the cultural significance of cows in Indian tradition, with several voices expressing support for his position.
Bihar Minister Ram Kripal Yadav backed the Chief Minister’s comments, stating that cows hold a sacred place in Indian society and are widely regarded as equivalent to a mother. He said cows not only carry religious importance but also contribute to livelihoods through dairy and agriculture, adding that protecting and respecting cows is a fundamental duty rooted in cultural tradition.
Religious leader Jagadguru Paramhans Acharya also supported the remarks, placing them within what he described as the broader philosophical framework of Sanatan Dharma. He said that debates around cow protection should be understood through traditional values rather than narrow interpretations. He further argued that inconsistent positions on cultural issues reflect a lack of deeper understanding of long-standing religious principles.

Adding to the discourse, Shia Markazi Chand Committee chairman Maulana Syed Abbas expressed support for a nationwide ban on cow slaughter, stating that such a move would respect the sentiments of the majority community. He said that acknowledging the cow’s cultural status could help strengthen social harmony, while ignoring these sentiments would be “unfortunate” in a diverse society.
Mahant Sitaram Das also endorsed the Chief Minister’s views, stating that the cow is revered as “Gau Mata” and is believed in Hindu tradition to embody divine presence. He said reverence for the cow is deeply embedded in religious practice and cultural belief systems, and that it should be treated with respect and devotion rather than as a mere animal.
The remarks come in the wake of CM Yogi Adityanath’s broader comments on cow protection, in which he stressed its civilisational importance and criticised those who describe cows only in utilitarian terms. He also urged religious leaders to guide communities in maintaining respect for traditional values associated with cows, reinforcing the ongoing national debate around animal protection, cultural identity, and religious sentiment.
